Photographing a Garden lizard ! - வேலிக்கு ஓணான் சாட்சி !!

Many may not like it .. to some it could be a very ugly creature !  .. I feel, this photo can come out really well.  The grand festival of Navarathri and the bommai golu at homes, makes us visit homes of close relatives and friends .. .. in one such recent visit saw this and photographed this .. though a commoner for villagers, not exactly so for us living in concrete apartments !! 

A chameleon sits motionlessly on a tree branch. Suddenly its sticky, two-foot-long tongue snaps out at 13 miles an hour, wrapping around a cricket or some other tiny insect, whipping its  snack back into the reptile’s mouth. The chameleon’s swift eating style is just one of its many features that’ll leave you tongue-tied.

 

ஓணான் பல்லி வகையைச் சார்ந்தது. இது  பச்சோந்தி போல் நிறம் மாறுவது அன்று. அதனைப்போன்று நீளமான நாக்கும் இல்லை. இது கண்களை 360° கோணத்தில் சுற்றாது. பெரும்பாலும் மரங்களிலும் செடிகளிலும் காணப்படும் இது சிறு பூச்சிகளை உண்ணும். வேகமாக ஓடும். பற்களை உடையது.

 

வேலிக்கு ஓணான் சாட்சி என்பது நாம் நன்கு அறிந்த பழமொழி !  .. .. இப்பொழுது இருக்கும் சிறுவர்களுக்கு ஓணான் கதை அவ்வளவாக தெரிய வாய்ப்பில்லை.  சிறு வயதில் முக்கியமாக கிராமப்புறங்களில், காரணமே இல்லாமல் வேட்டையாடப்பட்ட சிறு விலங்கினங்களில் ஓணானும் ஒன்று.  மெரீனா பீச்சில் கிரிக்கெட் விளையாடும் நாட்களில் சில சமயம், சிலர் ஒரு சாராரை பயமுறுத்த, உயிருடன் அல்லது செத்த ஓணானை கயிறில் கட்டி சுழற்றுவர் !!   ஓணான் ஒரு சாட்சியாக முடியுமா?? வேலிக்கு ஏன் ஓணான் சாட்சியாக வேண்டும்??  சார்புத்தன்மை (dependency) காரணமாக இருக்கலாம்.  வேலியில் வாசம் செய்கின்ற ஓணான் அந்த வேலியை சார்ந்திருக்கும் .  அதை சாட்சியாக்கினால் அதுவேலிக்கு சாதகமாக இருக்குமேயல்லாது நியாமமோ உண்மையோ இருக்காது என்பது இதன் அர்த்தமாக இருக்கலாம்.  தவறான சாட்சிகள் நிறுத்தப்படும்போது நீதி சாகிறது !!  

Not sure whether it was a simple lizard or a Chameleon. The oriental garden lizard (Calotes versicolor),  is an agamid lizard found widely distributed in indo-Malaya. It has also been introduced in many other parts of the world. Agama is a genus of small-to-moderate-sized, long-tailed, insectivorous Old World lizards. The genus Agama includes at least 37 species in Africa, especially sub-Saharan Africa, where most regions are home to at least one species.  Their colour also differs between species, between genders, and according to mood; for example, a dominant male in display mode is far brighter than when it has been caught, beaten by another male, or otherwise alarmed. Females tend to be less colourful than the males of the species.  

Chameleons   are a distinctive and highly specialized clade of Old World lizards.    The members of this family are most known for their distinct range of colors as they are able to shift in different hues and brightness. Because of the large number of species in their family, there is a large variability in their ability to change color. For some, it is more of a shift of brightness (shades of brown) whereas others it is a plethora of combinations of colors (reds, yellows, greens, and blues). Chameleons are distinguished by their zygodactylous feet, their prehensile tail, their laterally compressed bodies, their head casques, their projectile tongues, their swaying gait,  and crests or horns on their brow and snout. Chameleons' eyes are independently mobile, and because of this there are two separate, individual images that the brain is analyzing of the chameleon’s environment. When hunting prey, they focus forward in coordination, affording the animal stereoscopic vision. The eyes are able to move laterally 180° and vertically 160°.  Chameleons are adapted for climbing and visual hunting. The use of their prehensile tail offers stability when they are moving or resting while on a branch in the canopy; because of this, their tail is often referred to as a "fifth limb."
