School days of happiness : அரை நெல்லிக்காய், கமர்கட், ஆரஞ்சு மிட்டாய் !!

In our school days, in mid 1970s, almost all of those who studied with me were poor or so called middle-class.  A full one rupee itself was a luxury !! 

In front of school there used to be small pedlars selling candies, ice-creams, mango and the like.  Mittai aka Candy was a great hit !!   candies are  confections that features sugar as a principal ingredient. The category, called sugar confectionery in modern times, encompasses any sweet confection, including chocolate, chewing gum, and sugar candy.  The word candy entered the English language from the Old French çucre candi ("sugar candy").    

சுமார் 30 /40 / 50 வருஷங்கள் முன் பள்ளி சென்றோரின் ஆடம்பர செலவு என்ன என்று ஊகிக்க முடியுமா !! கல்வி நிலையங்களின்  வாசலில் தள்ளு வண்டிகளில் விற்கப்பட்ட  மிட்டாய்கள்.  ஐந்து காசு, பத்து காசு, அதிகப்படியாக நாலணா !! (அணா என்பது 6.1/4 பைசா !!) - எட்டணா கையில் கிட்டாத வஸ்து !!  

ஸ்கூல் வாசலில் - மாங்காய் பத்தை, புளியங்காய், கொரக்காப்புளி, அரை நெல்லிக்காய், கடலை உருண்டை,  கமர்கட்,  ஜவ்வு மிட்டாய், இலந்தை வடை, தேன் மிட்டாய், இஞ்சி மரபா,  தேன் மிட்டாய்,  ஆரஞ்சு மிட்டாய் இலந்தை வடாம்,  தேங்காய் பர்பி,  பல்லி மிட்டாய்,  அரிசி மிட்டாய்,  பாப்பின்ஸ், குச்சி ஐஸ், கோலிசோடா,  .. .. ம்ம் .. ம்ம் .. .. எவ்வளவு பொருள்கள் .. .. அன்றைய முக்கிய சிறப்பு - ஒரு கை அளவு மிட்டாய் இருந்தாலும், பல நண்பர்கள் சேர்ந்தே உண்டு மகிழ்வர்.  

மிட்டாய் என்பது சர்க்கரையை முதன்மை மூலப்பொருளாகக் கொண்ட இனிப்பு வகையாகும்.  இப்போது  காய்கறிகள்,பழங்கள் அல்லது கொட்டைகள் இனிப்பு அல்லது சர்க்கரை முலாம் பூசப்பட்டு இனிப்பூட்டப்பட்ட மிட்டாய்களாகவும் விற்கப்படுகின்றன. மிட்டாய்கள் வழக்கமாக சிறிய துண்டுகளாக தயாரிக்கப்படுகின்றன.  இப்போது மிட்டாய்கள் சாப்பிடாதீர்கள் !!  உடல் நலக்குறைவுக்கு வழி கோலும் என்று சொல்லி பீட்சா பர்கர் விழுங்க அறிவுரை தருகிறோமல்லவா !!   

It is not self-pity but way back in mid 1970s when we were studying – many of my classmates would walk to school bare-footed – a good slipper was a luxury those days !   .. .. when we finished our College, our dream aspiration was a Bank clerk job of Rs.1000 pm salary and a two-wheeler as a proud possession. Those days, We did live a life of happiness, sharing, contentment, care for fellow students and more !! 

In Economics, a luxury good (or upmarket good) is a good for which demand increases more than proportionally as income rises, so that expenditures on the good become a greater proportion of overall spending. Luxury goods are in contrast to necessity goods, where demand increases proportionally less than income. Luxury goods is often used synonymously with superior goods. The word "luxury" originated from the Latin word luxuria, which means exuberance, excess, abundance. 

Luxury goods have high income elasticity of demand: as people become wealthier, they will buy proportionately more luxury goods. This also means, however, that should there be a decline in income its demand will drop more than proportionately.  

 

Before concluding here is a newsitem of TOI a couple of months ago.  A 28-year-old doctor in Kancheepuram on Thursday night set afire his Mercedes Benz worth nearly 40 lakh after a fight with his girlfriend.  Villagers panicked after seeing the car on fire and informed police. 

Police said Kavin, 28, of Dharmapuri, completed his MBBS from a private medical college in Kancheepuram  and started working at a private hospital in the area. He had been in a relationship with a woman, a student from the same college, for more than two years. According to police, Kavin and the woman went for a drive in and around Kancheepuram. Later, he pulled over the car near a pond in Rajakulam village. As they were chatting, a quarrel broke out between the two. According to witnesses, Kavin took out an empty bottle and started filling it with fuel from the car. He then poured it on the car and set it afire even as his girlfriend tried to prevent him.  The  Kancheepuram Taluk police registered a case and let Kavin out on station bail. 

In 1970s – five rupee could buy candies / mango for the whole class room and people would share tiny bits of morsel so happily – now !! spoilt brats keep things for themselves and do not know the value of money.

 

Meantime, here is a shop selling mittai in front of Sri Parthasarathi swami temple – its owner is Anand who is into selling vathal, vadam and other fry items.  He is a good driver too and drives vehicle part-time on call.
