Egret, Heron ... .. and rice !!

 

Birds are attractive !  -  White ones are more attractive.  Here is an Egret with Thiruvallikkeni thirukkovil gopuram in the background !

 

புறநானூற்றில் கவிஞர் திருத்தாமனார், சேரமான வஞ்சனின் சிறப்புகளைக் குறிப்பிடும் பொழுது, அவன் தனக்கு  கொக்கின் நகம் போல இருக்கும் சோற்றையும் அளித்ததாகக் கூறுகிறார். 

நிழல்காண் தேறல் நிறைய வாக்கி,

யான்உண அருளல் அன்றியும், தான்உண்

மண்டைய கண்ட மான்வறைக் கருனை

கொக்குஉகிர் நிமிரல் ஒக்கல் ஆர

இதில் உகிர் எனும் சொல்லுக்கு நகம் என்று பொருள். நிமிரல் என்றால் விரைப்பான பருக்கைகள் உடைய சோறு என்று பொருள்,   கொக்கு உகிர் நிமிரல் என்ற சொற்றொடர், கொக்கின் நகம் போல இருக்கும் சோறு என்று பொருளாகிறது.

 

The great Egret (Ardea alba), also known as the common egret, large egret,   or great white heron,  is a large, widely distributed egret. The four subspecies are found in Asia, Africa, the Americas, and southern Europe. Recently, it has also been spreading to more northern areas of Europe. Distributed across most of the tropical and warmer temperate regions of the world, it builds tree nests in colonies close to water. 

The great egret was formally described in 1758 by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus in the tenth edition of his Systema Naturae under the binomial name Ardea alba.   The scientific name comes from Latin ardea, "heron", and alba, "white".
