Dear (s)
Two cricket crazy Nations are fighting it out. Earlier I had shared something on MJ Gopalan Trophy which was a tournament involving Tamilnadu and Ceylon; the island renamed as Sri Lanka in 1972 meaning ‘resplendent land’ in Sanskrit. Lankans have long names with two or three surnames inherited from their parents, making it difficult for pronunciation. See these two photos – Welegedara on the left and Vaas on the right.
At the time of posting this (3.50 pm on 18/11/09) at Ahmedabad in the First Test between India and Lanka, the Lions had posted a big riposte by scoring 522 for the loss of 5 in 135 overs. The host had earlier scored 426 aided by brilliant centuries by Dravid and Dhoni. With Motera not aiding any type of bowling and India going into the match with 4 specialist bowlers the grind is on. The first session was way different with Welegedara slicing into the famed batting line up with 3 and eventually finishing with 4 for 87 off 22.
This lanky left arm seamer has replaced illustrious Vaas. Vaas had taken 355 wickets in Tests (111) and 400 in One dayers (322). Vaas was a typical Question in any Sports Quiz as somebody who had more initials than the name. He was WKPUJC Vaas (Warnakulasuriya Patabendige Ushantha Joseph Chaminda).
Now Welegedara would replace him. He is UWMBCA Welegedara. Yes he is : Uda Walawwe Mahim Bandaralage Chanaka Asanka Welegedara.
If you want some news other than his initials, he made his test debut against England in the Third test Galle on Dec 2007. Very difficult to remember, isn’t it.
