This mopping up operation took place on Dec 12/2009 and the statutes were sliced from their pedestals, put inside gunny sacks and carted to Government museum.
Looking back the annals of history, the year 1911 was a milestone for it hosted the Delhi Durbar meaning Court of Delhi - a massive propaganda designed to be a link with the British Emperor.
Such festivities had been held earlier in 1887 marking the proclamation of Queen Victoria as Empress of India in 1887 and Edward VIII in 1903 presided over by Lord Curzon. George V attended the Durbar in 1911 and announced the moving of British India from Calcutta to New Delhi. In the grand event, all ruling Prince, noblemen, and others of note attended showing their obeisance to the sovereign. The Emperor reportedly wore the Crown of India containing thousands of exquisitely cut diamonds. An obelisk still remains at the Coronation park of Delhi.
Ironically, close to 100 years on the same December, those statues were swept brusquely – no one cared their existence or their removal.
