Old
timers will recall that the First Public Examination for the students used to
be at Class XI – the passed would join PUC in College and those days, the State
First used to secure a little over 400 out of 500 - a time when securing more than 80% was
considered the ultimate !! .. Those were
the times when Newspapers would roll out special editions containing the Roll
No. of those Candidates who passed the Examination. It was ‘all numbers’ and those Special
Supplements would sell like hot cakes…….. students, parents, near and dear
would be elated to see their Registration No. appearing on the newspaper – it
was a time to celebrate and so they would buy toffees and distribute ! – simple
life … and the elite few who got 400 and above and got State ranks – their
names would appear on the newspaper – the greatest of honours indeed…
Times
have changed but this caption has not changed – almost every year, the newsitem
reads ‘Girls came on top in the class ten examinations in the state’. This year
2012, it is no different with
nearly 89 per cent of them passing the Tamil Nadu government-conducted exams,
the results for which were announced today – 4th June 2012. This was the first set of exams held under
the uniform education syllabus - ‘Samacheer
Kalvi’ or Tamil Nadu Uniform System of
School Education or Equitable education system, a Government programme to integrate the
various school educational systems within the state which has over 1.2 crore
students in four streams of school education comprising about 45,000 state
board schools, 11,000 matriculation schools, 25 oriental schools and 50
Anglo-Indian schools, with different syllabus, textbooks and schemes of
examinations. Lot
of confusion prevailed when it was introduced.
This year, 86 % of the over 11 lakh students cleared the
exams; a Tanjavur student, Srinath, topped the exams with 497 out of 500 marks
– how phenomenal and how proud his parents, teachers should feel. A little over 88 per cent of girls and around
84 per cent of boys cleared the exams even as there was a sharp dip in number
of students scoring centum in Maths, coming down from around 12000 to around
1100 this time.
Those
are statistics – more than the students and some parents, we at SYMA have been
anxiously waiting the results. As you
would know, we have invested lot of time and energy in running our tuition
centre ‘SYMA Growth’. Our aim and target
group is different – it is not the best students that study in city school who
try every sinew to get great marks.
The
students of SYMA Growth come from economically lower group of the Society, who
lack the financial means to have private tuitions. Most of them are children of parents who
either have not been educated or are engaged in smaller jobs and do not have a
good environment conducive to studies.
We have handpicked them and have tried to nurture them to ensure that
they pass, raise their knowledge and end-up in good positions, which for sure
would raise their economic conditions.
Thus the challenge is always higher – as they come from poor background
with illiterate parents, they are otherwise not well-supported.
A section of our Boys & Girls (some parents too) during inaugural Pooja 2011
We
have done everything – providing good infrastructure, ensuring tutoring by dedicated
intelligent teachers, trying to develop their personality and providing them
confidence – supporting them economically too;
still – after closely monitoring them in the examinations conducted
periodically, we had our pulse raising with anxiety, expecting them to do
well. Today, they have done us good – by
coming out with flying colours and securing good marks. The results are really encouring making SYMA
happy and proud.
We are very happy to know that all the students of our English
Medium passed; and 4 from Tamil Medium failed. Statistically:
X Standard – English Medium:
37 Appeared – 37 Passed : 10
Students secured above 400; of them 4 above 450.
C Rahul of NKT Boys High School is the topper securing 458 out of
500. His
father works in a small hotel and sure he has done his father proud !!!!
X Standard – Tamil Medium
25 appeared : 21 Pass [4 failed] – One student – Augustin Arul
Ponvenchur secured 418.
Congratulations and Well
done – Rahul and all other boys & girls.
