First match of IPL 6
in Chennai, labelled as ‘Indian Derby’ ~ between home team Chennai Super Kings
and neighbours Royal Challengers Bangalore.
In some ways, IPL match is a nightmare for those living nearby………..
first problem is the traffic ~ with Bells Road not open to traffic, buses get
diverted towards Triplicane High Road, and there is total chaos – people are
suffering in sweltering heat…. the holiday crowd that has come to beach is
suffering, not knowing where to wait for the bus and if at all a bus comes, how
to get into the crowded one……….. people are unhappy.

There are milling
crowds winding its way inside the stadium even as anchor Rochelle Maria Rao is
set to entertain……… the other glam of the season is Karishma Kotak. Remember Mandira Bedi !!! ~ on the seats,
today it is Ramiz Raja and Sunil Gavaskar…………..
Gava gaffe ~ that is the beauty of IPL – you have Dhoni and Kohli
captaining opposite sides ~ playing together for the Nation, for the Country …
for different club ~ that is IPL !
During the second
Test between Sri Lanka and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Boxing
Day 1995, Australian umpire Darrell Hair humiliated him by calling him a thrower……… the was no-balled
seven times in three overs by Hair, who believed the then 23 year old was
bending his arm and straightening it in the process of delivery; an illegal
action in cricket. The bowler to suffer
was Muthiah Muralitharan……….
One of best exponents
of spin, he took 800 Test wickets and 534 one day wickets……… Murali, has Chennai connection ~ he married Madhimalar
Ramamurthy, in Mar 2005. Madhimalar is
the daughter of late Dr S. Ramamurthy of Malar Hospitals. [now Fortis Malar –
changed management] It is stated that Murali holds Overseas Citizenship of
India and does not need a visa for travelling to India.
Muttiah Muralitharan,
ironically becomes the first man to miss
a game directly because of the political scenario in Tamil Nadu. Lasith Malinga
did miss Mumbai Indians' game in Chennai, but officially he was nursing a bad
back and was not going to play anyway. Ravi Rampaul has replaced him. Chennai has brandished another uncapped
player in place of Rajpoot… today Mohit Mahipal Sharma from Ballabgarh is
playing. Have travelled through this place nearer
Faridabad.
No Pak players allowed in IPL………… a
patriotic decision … but you have Ramiz Raja in the box, Waqar Younis on the dug-out and Asad Rauf,
the Umpire, in the middle !!!!
Now getting back to
that ‘Southern Derby’ comment…. I first heard of Derby for our beloved
Srinivasa Venkatraghavan played for Derbyshire in mid 1970s. Heard that the first trouble for the people
was pronouncing his name. Derby is a city and unitary authority
in the East Midlands region of England. Derbyshire is the county in the East Midlands
of England.
A derby is a type of horse race, named after the Derby Stakes, still run at Epsom
Downs Racecourse in England. That was in turn named after Edward Smith-Stanley,
12th Earl of Derby, who inaugurated the race in 1780. Traditionally,
the term "derby" is used strictly to refer to races restricted to
three-year-olds, though in many derbys, older horses do run.
At Chepauk, the
dangerous dreaded Chris Gayle got out cheaply ~ chasing a wide delivery of
Chris Morris and Dhoni completing a good catch
