In
English language, nexus is a connection, tie or link. Etymologically, it is
from Latin – bind. For
modern children – Nexus is the professional wrestling stable in WWE that
competed on its Raw brand and originally consisted of eight rookies of NXT
season 1 headed by Wade Barret.
For
most of these information, we browse the internet through a web browser – a software application which retrieves, presents and
transmits information resources on the World Wide Web. An information resource
is identified by a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) and may be a web page,
image, video, or other piece of content. The
primary purpose of a web browser is to access the WWW.
There are very many web browsers [don’t confuse with
search engines] and most popular amongst them would be : world wide web (1991); Mosaic (1993);
Netscape Navigator (1994); Internet
Explorer (1995); Mozilla
Navigator (2002); Safari (2003); Mozilla Firefox (2004) and Google Chrome
(2008)
The
first of the above - WorldWideWeb was later renamed to Nexus to avoid
confusion between the software and the World Wide Web. It was the first web browser and the only
gateway to web at that time. Internet
Explorer commonly known as IE is a Microsoft product, included as a part of the
MS Windows line of operating systems, starting in 1995.
Before
proceeding further, answer whether it was by choice that you use the browser ? do you have multi browsers on
your desktop and task bar ? OR - has your Office limited your options
by providing only one – say Internet Explorer ???
One
more Q ! - Does your choice of browser determine
intelligence ?
Going
by a recent research made and released by Consulting firm AptiQuant, Internet
Explorer users have a lower than average IQ. The study gave web surfers an IQ test,
then plotted their scores against the browser they used. IE surfers were found to have an
average IQ lower than people using Chrome, Firefox and Safari. Users of Camino
and Opera rated highest.
The
report has sparked anger from IE supporters, who have threatened AptiQuant with
legal action. Researchers gave over 100,000 web surfers a free online IQ test.
Scores were stored in a database along with each person's web browser data. The results suggested that Internet
Explorer surfers had an average IQ in the low eighties. Chrome, Firefox and
Safari rated over 100, while minority browsers Opera and Camino had an
"exceptionally higher" score of over 120.
AptiQuant
stressed that using
IE doesn't mean you have low intelligence. "What it really says is that if
you have a low IQ then there are high chances that you use Internet Explorer,"
said AptiQuant CEO Leonard Howard. The findings have been treated with
scepticism by Professor David Spiegelhalter of Cambridge University 's
Statistical Laboratory. The
study is published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Dr
James Thompson, senior honorary lecturer in psychology at University College
London, said it had always been known that IQ test results are a combination of
innate ability and other variables. "Life
is an IQ test and a personality test and an IQ result contains elements of both
(but mostly intelligence). "If an IQ test doesn't motivate someone then
that is a good predictor in itself."
IQ
is Intelligence Quotient – a score derived from one of several different
standardized tests designed to assess intelligence. The term "IQ"
comes from the German Intelligenz-Quotient. When modern IQ tests are
constructed the median score is set to 100 and a standard deviation to 15. There are many scales and one
amongst them Lewis Terman, developer of the Stanford-Binet intelligence test,
chose the category ranges for score levels on that test using a standard
deviation of 16. Terman's
Stanford-Binet Fourth Revision classification IQ Range ("Deviation
IQ") Intelligence Classification

But
understand that neither the above scale nor the research results are likely to
have any direct bearing on life. Success
depends on many factors, one amongst them being luck, then opportunity and more… so never judge your child or anybody
else by looks or by IQ or by any other test – there are always things in life
beyond your perception. -- and success does not spring from any particular
yardstick
