A product
recall is a request to return a product after the discovery of safety issues or
product defects that might endanger the consumer or put the maker/seller at
risk of legal action. The recall is an effort to limit liability for corporate
negligence which can cause significant legal costs and limit ruination of the
corporate image. Primarily any product
can be recalled and that includes the automobiles too. An
automotive recall is a way for a manufacturer to tell you that there could be
something about your car or vehicle that
presents a risk of injury or property damage. The recalls are intended to fix known problems
with vehicles in an effort to keep roadways, the vehicle, the owner, driver and
other road users safer. Vehicle recall refers to the term where all
vehicles sold by the OEM which are found to contain a defect and the
manufacturer offers to correct that defect without charging the customer.
Japan's Toyota Motor Corp
has announced that it would recall a total 1.67 million vehicles globally in a
voluntary move to address three separate defects including a faulty brake
master cylinder that could hinder the brake's performance. Toyota said in an email it was not aware of
any crashes, injuries or deaths resulting from the defects. Some 1.05 million
vehicles will be recalled in Japan and 615,000 overseas, covering Toyota models
Crown Majesta, Crown, Noah, Voxy, Corolla Rumion and Auris, as well as more
than a dozen Lexus models.
In India, there is no
legal ‘vehicle recall policy’ - passenger vehicle makers in India have been
announcing selective recalls on a voluntary basis but there have been no
reported instances of customers being compensated due to a manufacturing defect
in any car model. India is gearing up to establish its first ever authority
with the power to initiate mass-scale product recall. Designed on the lines of
the Federal Trade Commission of the US, the authority will intervene with class
action against manufacturers or providers of services whose faulty products
have impacted a large number of buyers.
