There are different
cultures ~ in India has a rich heritage – one of respecting elders. . In a
Culture which teaches the virtues of living together (joint family) and seeking
the blessings of elders [not restricted to parents] always, perhaps – just a day
to commemorate is meaningless. Still, in
keeping with the modern Western trend – there are ‘Elders’ day’; ‘mothers day’
and more !
15th
March was one such occasion in UK.
Mothering Sunday is a holiday celebrated in some parts of Europe. Over
the years, it has become an occasion for honouring the mothers of children and
giving them presents. In the UK,
Mothering Sunday is celebrated in the same way as Mother's Day is celebrated
elsewhere. Mother's Day, is now a day to
honour mothers and other mother figures, such as grandmothers, stepmothers and
mothers-in-law. Many people make a special effort to visit their mother. They
take cards and gifts to her and may treat her to brunch, lunch or high tea in a
cafe, restaurant or hotel. People who cannot visit their mother usually send
gifts or cards to her !!!
Maria Fowler, is an English glamour model. Fowler has been featured in UK and Worldwide
publications; she had a supporting role
in ITV2 series The Only Way Is Essex.
Saturday was all about family for Maria Fowler, as she treated her mum
to an early Mother's Day dinner. What
grabbed attention was her accessory and new hair cut. Maria treated her mum to
a dinner at Gaucho's in London, and the ladies made sure to dress up for their
family dinner – photos showed her presenting bananas to her mother.
Elton John
[knighted] is an English singer, songwriter, composer, pianist, record
producer, and occasional actor.
Newsreports also commented on Elton John earning £340,000 [Rs.3.16
crores approx] a night on US tour,
and his mother celebrating her 90th birthday... at £14-a-head tapas bar
! The pop star now on a US star is
considered one of the richest singers. With an estimated £240m, Sir Elton is
one of the richest singers of all time; 5,000 miles away, his mother celebrated
her birthday at low-key restaurant in West Sussex. She's not thought to have spoken to her son
for seven years after family rift; Sir Elton is still believed to support his
mother financially.
On a
good note, Royal Navy sailors and Royal Marines on board a warship sent a
Mother's Day message back home from the Gulf.
Crew members lined up on the flight deck of destroyer HMS Dauntless to
form the word "Mum" and two kisses. The photo was taken from the
ship's Lynx Mark 8 helicopter which was on a training flight. The greeting was
sent on behalf of the 210-strong crew of the Portsmouth-based warship, which is
in the Gulf to deter piracy and keep sea lanes open.
For many of the
service personnel on board the destroyer, it is their first time on a major
deployment away from the UK. The
Commanding Officer of the Ship is quoted as saying - "We are all so grateful for the
amazing support we have received from home in the last few months and it is
great to be able to send a rather different Mother's Day e-card while we are
deployed."
HMS Dauntless left
Portsmouth at the start of January for a five-month routine deployment. In
addition to anti-piracy patrols, it will make several stops in the
Mediterranean for training as well as visiting ports in a number of Gulf
states.
