Morne Morkel getting out says it all ~ pic credit : bcci.tv. A Test victory is always good thing to
cherish ~ today at Feroz Shah Kotla in Test no. 2191, India beat South Africa
by a huge margin of 337 runs winning the 4th Test and the Freedom
Trophy. How
often would we get to see this sort of bowling performance !!!
Bowler | O | M | R | W | Econ |

Visiting Proteas
were bowled out for 143, another low score
in series where they only passed 200 once in seven attempts. Between them,
India's four specialist bowlers sent down 136.1 overs, bowled 87 maidens as SA
dourly defended everything. They in fact
played 143.1 overs and made 143 !!! AB
de Villiers played out 297 balls, Hashim Amla 244, T Bhavma 153 and Faf du Plessis 120 making 43,
25, 34 & 10 !
The score card
reads : India 334 (Rahane 127, Ashwin 56, Abbott 5-40, Piedt 4-117) and 267 for
5 dec (Rahane 100*, Kohli 88, Morkel 3-51) beat South Africa 121 (Jadeja 5-30)
and 143 (de Villiers 43, Ashwin 5-61, Umesh 3-9)
Way back in Jan
1964, Test no. 551, a Pongal test was played at Corporation stadium [not many
would know that besides Chepauk another stadium hosted Tests in Madras] – the match
was drawn. India playing first made 457
in 162 overs and declared when only 7 wickets had been lost. England led by MJK Smith made 317. Chandu Borde bowled 67.4 overs took 5 for
88. Babu Nadkarni had magic figures of
32-27-5-0. In the 2nd
innings, India struggled and declared at 152/9. Chasing 293, England made 241/5
– this time Nadkarni had 6-4-6-2 ! Borde bowled 22; Durrani 21 and AG Kripal
Singh 26 – then why RG Nadkarni only 6 – was he injured ?
That was not to be
his only stingy performance !! In the
1960-61 series against Pakistan - whence
all five Tests were drawn, and fewer
than 200 runs were scored on 11 of the 25 days' play - he returned figures of
32-24-23-0 in Kanpur, followed by 34-24-24-1 in Delhi.
Today’s margin of 337 is our biggest in terms of
runs in Test history, beating 320-run win against Australia in Mohali in
2008-09.
Like Babu Nadkarni, Jadeja did not give runs at
all – he bowled 17 maiden overs on the trot narrowly missing Nadkarni’s record
of 21 in a row.
Statistics and more …. India has won the freedom
series 3-0
Happy Indian fan
7th Dec 2015.
