On a
day when the Nation was saddened by the death of Mrs Sushma Swaraj and at
Chennai, by the loss of Mrs YG Parthasarathi, the news of passing of former MLA
of Triplicane may have missed the attention of many.
Past
! former MLA – who ? ~ Triplicanites do
you know, who was the first representative of Triplicane Constituency – way
back in 1952 AM Sambandam won on behalf of Indian National Congress defeating
MS Abdul Majeed and 11 other candidates.
Mr RR Dalavai, a freedom fighter of repute got only 275 votes standing
as an Independent.
For those
interested in politics – till 1967 it was Madras State and MLAs representing
our constituency were : AM Sambandam (1952);
Haja Sheriff (1957 INC); 1962 & 67 VR Nedunchezhiyan [DMK]; later
when State was rechristened as Tamilnadu, 1971 Nedenchezhian again; 1977 M
Aranganathan; 1980 Haja Sharif; 1984 Abdul Samad; 1989 & 96 Nanjil Manoharan (DMK); 1991 Mohd

At Triplicane, Srinivas
Youngmens Association, popularly known as SYMA has been in the field of Social
service since 1977. We have a Medical
Centre, blood analytical lab, Educational Tuition centre and have been actively engaged in various other
activities including provision of free uniforms, educational aid, health camps,
blood donation, environmental cleanliness, civic programmes and more. To propagate and to keep the members abreast
of all the activities, SYMA launched its own newsletter called ‘Bliss’. The voice of SYMA ‘Bliss’ was on print since 2003 and me [S. Sampathkumar,
presently Secretary SYMA] was its Editor from Sept 2003. [sadly there has been
no issues since Jan 2018 due the preoccupations of Yours Truly]
SYMA – BLISS was a 4 paged newsletter which apart from the activities of SYMA included articles on motivating students, bringing out the good aspects of the Society, of the occurrences in Triplicane and on some famous persons of the locality… most of them written by Yours Truly. The newsletter was well read with 500 copies being printed and distributed to SYMA members, well-wishers, patrons and locals of Thiruvallikkeni. Besides the print edition it was circulated through e-mail to a list of around 400 people who have registered their e-mail IDs with SYMA. Previous issues can be downloaded from our website www.syma.in
There have been
appreciations ~ bouquets in person to the Editor……. Nothing pleases a Writer
more than a sincere feedback on the contents.
Here is one from the archive, a neatly
written letter dated 2.4.2005 by Mr SAM
Hussain, the then MLA of Triplicane constituency representing DMK party.
Mr SAM Hussain was sitting MLA at that time and was one of the well-wishers of SYMA, participated in many of our programmes and helped SYMA – the high mast light at Triplicane was
installed with his initiative and support.
It was quite
disheartening for SYMA office bearers to read the news of passing away of former
DMK MLA from Triplicane ‘Thousand Lights’ S M A Hussain on 6.8.2019. he was a regular walker in Marina beach in
the morning till old age caught up with him.
He was 80 when he breathed last. Hussain
was one of the oldest DMK members and has been working for the party since his
youth.
Here is a photo
with me sitting alongside Mr Hussain. Mr
SAM Hussain, won Triplicane seat in 2001 securing 34943 votes [49.79% of the
polled votes] defeating his nearest Congress rival who had 31267 votes.
Deep
condolences on his passing away !!
With regards – S.
Sampathkumar.
