Barathiyar vizha - 31 years ago - celebrated by SYMA

 

வந்தே மாதரம் என்போம்-எங்கள்  மாநிலத் தாயை வணங்குதல் என்போம்.

- என்ற வரிகளை கேட்டு மெய் சிலிர்த்தது உண்டா ?

 

The man who was to become an iconoclastic freedom fighter was born in a small village called Ettayapuram on Dec 11, 1882. His  parents  Chinnasami Subramanya Iyer and Lakhsmiammaal named him Subbaiah.  From a very young age he learnt music and at 11^th , he learnt songs; he was conferred the title of "Bharathi" (one blessed by Saraswati, the goddess of learning).  Interestingly, this is what he claimed himself to be (at a much later stage !) 

சுப்ரமணிய பாரதியார் ~ ஒரு உன்னத பிறவி.   கவிதைகள் வாயிலாக மக்களின் மனதில் விடுதலை உணர்வை ஊட்டியவர். இவர் ஒரு கவிஞர் மட்டுமல்லாமல் ஒரு எழுத்தாளர், பத்திரிக்கை ஆசிரியர், சமூக சீர்திருத்தவாதி - தன்  காலத்துக்கு  மிகவும் பல்லாண்டுகள்  பிறகு நடக்க வல்லவை பற்றி  கூர் நோக்குடன் சிந்தித்தவர்.  

We adore Mahakavi Barathiyar –  and he lived in Thiruvallikkeni Thulasinga Perumal Koil Street, nearer Azhagiyasingar sannathi.  

SYMA [Srinivas Youngmen’s Association]  has been in the field of Social service since 1977 starting with street cleaning campaigns and keeping environment, more specifically, the temple tank and its surroundings clean.   We at SYMA, feel strongly the primary responsibility of improving the Society and helping the underprivileged.   

Besides our primary activities of Medical Service and Educational service, we have been celebrating days of National importance.  Chanced upon an invitation card – Celebrations of 110^th birth anniversary of National Poet Subrahmanya Barathiyar on 8.12.1991.  

Yes, more than 3 decades back – the  Invitation given to the Chief Guest Shri Mandayam S Parthasarathi Iyengar was kept safely and recently shared with me by Sri MA Narasimhan.   The meticulous grand wise person of Thiruvallikkeni  renowned scholar and centenarian Mandayam Sri S Parthasarathi Iyengar passed away in Apr 2021    at ripe age of 104!  He was 74 at the time of function and was perhaps the only person there to have seen Barathiyar as Mahakavi was the Editor of magazines run by Mandayam brothers. 

The birth anniversary function had been organized infront of Sri Parthasarathi swami thirukovil.  Mr R Srinivasan was the President of SYMA and the dignitaries invited includes :  Mr Mohammad Asif, TN Minister- Rural Development, Thiru Kumari Ananthan & Avvai Natarajan, Ms Sarojini Narayanaswami, Ms Lalitha Barathi, Mr Rajkumar Barathi, Ravichandran Barathi and Sri Rakami, a great writer who wrote life histories of Vanchinathan and other patriots.  Vizhaventhan NKT Muthu was another important dignitary invited. 

Those of us at SYMA for sure would feel nostalgic about this function 31 years ago ! – and feel proud in the way SYMA has prospered over the years  to serve the society.

PS:  அண்மை காலங்களில் நம் சைமா - ஸ்ரீனிவாஸ் இளைஞர்கள் நற்பணி சங்கம் என குறிப்பிட்டு வருகிறோம்.  இந்த அழைப்பிதழில் 'நற்பணி குழு' என்று உள்ளது. The word Association is written as :  சங்கம்.   சங்கம் என்னும் சொல் புலவர் குழுவைக் குறிக்கும் வகையில் சங்கநூல்களில் காணப்படவில்லை!!  பரிபாடலில் சங்கம் என்னும் சொல் ஒரே ஓர் இடத்தில் பயிலப்பட்டுள்ளது. அதுவும் வரம்பில்லாத ஓர் எண்ணைக் குறிக்கிறது.  தமிழ் நிகண்டுகளில் -:   குழாம்; குழு; சங்கம்; சபை; கழகம்;         கூடுதல்; ஈட்டம்-    இன்ன பிற வார்த்தைகளை Associationக்கு இணையாக காணலாம்.
