Odisha’s
noted Culture Specialist Padma Shri recipient - Dr. Rajat Kumar Kar died on 8.5.2022 evening.
He passed away while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.
Dr.
Kar holds the unique record of being the
longest and oldest active commentator of the World Famous Rath Yatra of Lord
Jagannath on both TV and Radio for the last 62 years. Dr. Rajat Kumar Kar was
conferred Padma Shri for Literature and
Education. He had received the fourth-highest civilian award of the country
from President Ram Nath Kovind in 2021. He has immensely contributed to the
revival of the dying art of Pala of Odisha.
The
Padma Shri recipient commentator was born on October 2, 1934 in Mahanga of
Cuttack district. He has written more than 6 non-fiction books and several
books based on Lord Jagannath.
Our
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji tweeted - Dr. Rajat Kumar Kar was a doyen
of the cultural world. His multifaceted persona was seen in the manner in which
he chronicled the Rath Yatra, wrote on diverse topics and worked to revive Pala
art. Saddened by his passing away. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om

Also,
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed grief over the demise of the
eminent scholar. In his condolence message, the Chief Minister said, "Late
Kar has enriched Odia literature in various ways, he will always be remembered
for his astounding contribution in promotion Odia culture and traditions,
especially Jagannath Culture, today Odisha lost a proud son."
