forgotten martyrs of freedom struggle - drama at Vande Matharam exhibition SYMA 2022

நீங்கள் கடைசியாக மேடை நாடகம் பார்த்தது எப்போது ?  - ஒரு மணிநேர நாடகம் பார்க்க பொறுமை உண்டா ??"  - சுதந்திர போராட்டம் - சும்மா கிடைக்கவில்லை நம் சுதந்திரம் - நாம் இன்று சுவாசிக்கும் காற்றின் காரணம் எண்ணற்ற தியாகிகளின் தியாகங்கள் .. .. 

Prime Minister Hon'ble Shri Narendra Modiji    urged the Nation  to put the "tiranga" ('tricolour', the national flag) as their display pictures on social media profiles between August 2 and 15. In his 'Mann Ki Baat' radio broadcast, he flagged a movement called 'Har Ghar Tiranga' (tricolour on every house) being organised from August 13 to 15.  The patriotic citizens responded with fervor.  More than six crore selfies with the National flag have been uploaded on ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ website   

SYMA in association with NKT National College of Education of Women organized a 3 day thematic exhibition on the freedom movement titled ‘Vandha Matharam’.  The very words ‘Vande Maataram’ evoked sense of freedom struggle,  Bande Maataram; (Mother, I bow to thee) is a poem written in highly sanskritized Bengali  by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in 1870s, which he included in his 1882 Bengali novel Anandamath.  The poem was first sung by Rabindranath Tagore in the 1896 session of the Indian National Congress.  The first two verses of the song were adopted as the National Song of India in October 1937 by the Congress Working Committee prior to the end of colonial rule in August 1947.

75 ஆண்டுகள் நாம் அனுபவித்து வரும் சுதந்திரத்தை பாராட்டும் வகையில் இவ்வருடம் நாம் 'வந்தே மாதரம்' - சுதந்திரம் சும்மா கிடைக்கவில்லை, பல்லாயிரக்கணக்கானோர் தம் உயிர் ஈந்ததால் போராடி பெற்றது - என பொருட்காட்சியும் பல்வேறு நிகச்சிகளையும் நடத்தினோம்.  இந்த அரங்கத்தில் பல்வேறு கலை நிகழ்ச்சிகளை ஏற்பாடு செய்யும்போது - 'ஜோதி டிரஸ்ட்' என்ற அமைப்பு ஒரு நாடகம் நடத்த விரும்பி கேட்டனர்.

When we received a request from Jothi Trust for performing a stage drama, nothing struck our mind.  It was a drama on Nation’s freedom struggle and a scene depicting begging made viewers cry !!** The drama also contained this song written by Mahakavi Barathiyar. 

பாரதியாரின் தேசிய கீதங்கள்/ சுதந்திரப் பள்ளு: ராகம் - வராளி தாளம் - ஆதி 

ஆடுவோமே பள்ளு பாடுவோமே ஆனந்த சுதந்திரம் அடைந்து விட்டோமென்று ஆடுவோமே பள்ளு பாடுவோமே  

 Triplicane is a sacred land, a land that had many freedom fighters, a land that houses century old Educational institutions and has patronized art & culture.  A few decades ago, there were many Sabhas – and at least two major venues for stage dramas – ‘the Parthasarathi Swami sabha’ at Venkatrangam Street and NKT arangam at NKT Girls High School. 

Regular cinema goers may know the story of Rajan, a prison warden, trying to mould six paroled convicts and one among them is Sangili .. .. yes, Pallandu Vazhga that had MG Ramachandran and MN Nambiar, VK Ramasamy, Thengai Srinivasan, PS Veerappa and RS Manohar as Sangili.  Rasipuram Subramaniyan Iyer Manohar acted in over 200 films and was known as Nadaga Kavalar as he hosted mythological plays – most of them were staged here.  The place also evokes memory of vizha vendhan NKT Muthu.

A few decades ago – stage dramas thrived – there were mythological plays, then there were troupes of YG Parthasarathi, Mouli, SVe Shekhar, Crazy Mohan and more .. .. people had the patience and desire to see them and hence turned out in large numbers .. .. not any longer – dramas are not really patronized these days – is that ‘growing intolerance’ !!  

We live at a time, when crores are  spent on ‘movie teasers’ and they create their audience trying to portray that it is so good and people are liking .. .. and still films like   Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chaddha has failed to impress audience. It crashed at the box office, making a collection of merely Rs 2 crore only on first day !! Laal Singh Chaddha has Kareena Kapoor in the titular role and she spoke in one of her recent interviews that content is the king in any cinema. The film  is a remake of Hollywood's comedy-drama film Forrest Gump, featuring Tom Hanks.    According to some  estimates, this film may shut shop in the upcoming week or so. Around Rs 50 crore is the total earning made by this movie in 7 days. After analysing the public responses to Laal Singh Chaddha, the experts are saying that this film is a big flop and will be incapable to cross Rs 75 crore earnings !!.  

Not a post on the movie but on the drama – storyline simple – a family – parents now Octogenarians reliving their role in freedom struggle.  Both of them had participated in the freedom movement with the man teaching silambam and various arts to Indians ! and mother teaching songs invoking freedom.  

A couple of touching scenes – old woman goes begging on the street, not really fro the alms but secretly propagating the meeting where the fiery Subrahmanya Siva and Mahakavi Barathiyar would speak and arouse the urge to fight for freedom.  In another, a family is busy preparing for the marriage of daughter – father vanishes in the freedom struggle, then the son (when there are couple of days left for marriage of sister) is sent for agitation and dies as a martyr.  The mother hearing that her son has passed away, feels proud that there is a martyr in their family – then, then, when the freedom fighters seek funds for the freedom struggle, they decide to donate all the jewellery bought for the marriage !  .. .. that is not the end – the die-hard woman also decides to donate the house in which they are living ! 

Begging on the streets – for the sake of freedom for the Nation : 

Freedom was not gotten without any bloodshed ! – there were innumerable martyrs who shed blood, were brutally attacked by the colonial British Government, thousands lost their lives without finding a mention even in the History as written by Commies, Brits and Congis.  Sad !

சுதந்திர போராட்ட சரித்திரம் சரிவர  எழுதப்படாததால்  இன்றைய இளைய தலைமுறைக்கு சுதந்திர போராட்டத்தின் அருமையும் பெருமையும் புரியவில்லை.    அன்று, வங்கத்தின் பிபின் சந்திரர் கைது செய்யப்பட்டால், மராட்டியத்தில் விடுதலைப்போர் வீரர் பாலகங்காதர திலகர் கைது செய்யப்பட்டால், தென் தமிழ்நாட்டின் துாத்துக்குடியில் வ.உ.சி.,சிதம்பரனார், அதனை கண்டித்து போராடி கைதாவார். ஆயிரக்கணக்கான மக்கள் வீதிகளில் திரண்டு, போர் முழக்கம் செய்வார்கள். அதைத்தான், 'செப்புமொழி பதினெட்டுடையாள் எனினும் சிந்தனை ஒன்றுடையாள்' என்று, மாகவி பாரதி தேசபக்தி கவிதை முழங்கினாரோ !! . 

இந்த டிராமாவை பார்க்கும்போது என் நினைவுக்கு வந்த கதாநாயகி - வை மு கோதைநாயகி அம்மாள். வை. மு. கோதைநாயகி ஒரு சகாப்தம். [1901 - 1960]   - திருவல்லிக்கேணியில் வாசித்த அவர்,   துப்பறியும் புதினம் எழுதிய முதல் தமிழ்ப்பெண் எழுத்தாளர்.  ஜகன்மோகினி என்ற பத்திரிகை நடத்தினார்.  திருவல்லிக்கேணியில் வசித்த முண்டாசு கவிஞர் பாரதியார் -  வை.மு.கோ.விற்காகவே தம் ஆடுவோமே, பள்ளுப் பாடுவோமே என்ற பாட்டைப் புனைந்ததாகவும், பின்னர் டி.கே. பட்டம்மாள் இந்தப் பாட்டினால் பிரபலமானார் என்பது செய்தி.  

மகாத்மா காந்தி  மதராஸ்  வருகை தந்த போது வை.மு.கோதை நாயகி அம்மாள் காந்தியைச் சந்தித்தார். இந்நிகழ்வு வை.மு.கோவின் வாழ்க்கையில் பெரும் திருப்பத்தை ஏற்படுத்தியது. காந்தியின் எளிமையான தோற்றமும், ஆராவாரமற்ற அவரது உறுதியான நாவன்மையும் அம்மையாரை மிகவும் கவர்ந்தது. பட்டாடையே உடுத்திப் பழக்கப்பட்ட வை.மு.கோ. அதுமுதல் கதர் புடவையையே அணியத்தொடங்கினார்.மங்கல நாணைத் தவிர ஆடம்பரமான அணிகலன்களைத் தவிர்த்து, வேறு நகைகளை அணிவதில்லை என்று உறுதி பூண்டு தனது அணிகலன்களை தேசிய போராட்டத்திற்கு உடனடியாக கொடுத்தார்.  அம்புஜம் அம்மையார், ருக்மணி இலட்சுமிபதி, வசுமதி இராமசாமி ஆகியவர்களுடன் இணைந்து சமூக சேவையில் ஈடுபட்டார்.  

1931 இல் மகாத்மா காந்தி கள்ளுக்கடை மறியல் அழைப்பு விடுத்தபோது வை மு கோ  திருவல்லிக்கேணியில் தற்போதைய பெசண்ட் ரோட்டில் திருமலாச்சாரி பள்ளி இருக்குமிடத்தின் அருகே இருசப்ப கிராமணித் தெருவில் இருந்த கள்ளுக்கடை முன் மறியல் செய்தார். சென்னை சைனா பஜாரில் தடையை மீறி ஊர்வலம் சென்றதால், தலைவர்கள் பலருடன் கோதைநாயகியும் கைது செய்யப்பட்டார். ஆறு மாதச் சிறைத் தண்டனையும் நூறு ரூபாய் அபராதமும் விதிக்கப்பட்டது. அபராதம் கட்ட மறுத்ததால் கூடுதலாக நான்கு வாரம் சிறைத் தண்டனை அம்மையாருக்கு விதிக்கபட்டது.  சுதந்திர போராட்டத்தில் பலமுறை சிறை சென்ற தியாகி இவர்.  பின்னாளில் வடக்கு குளத்தங்கரையில் 'மஹாத்மாஜி சேவா சங்கம்' நிறுவினார்.  

What impressed most in this amateur drama was – actors were Septuagenarians and Octogenarians – the enthusiasm of those old-aged people was really unbridled as they acted, sang, danced and impressed the small group of audience.  Here are some photos and couple of videos of that enlightening drama by Jothi Trust
