In the cities too there are birds – may not be exotic – we get too see different sparrows, king fishers, vultures, crows, fly catchers, barbets, parrots and many pigeons.  Somehow even at places where pigeons crowd, we do not generally get to see fledgling pigeons.  Feral pigeons – the ones we see in our cities – are descended from rock doves, and remain essentially the same bird.

மாரி,  என்ற பெயர்ச்சொலுக்கு :  மழை;   நீர்; மேகம்.; கள்; புள்வகை; மரணம் என பல பொருட்கள் உண்டு. 

ஊன்றுசால் மருங்கின் ஈன்றதன் பயனே;

மாரி பொய்ப்பினும், வாரி குன்றினும்,

இயற்கை அல்லன செயற்கையில் தோன்றினும்,

காவலர்ப் பழிக்கும், இக் கண்ணகன் ஞாலம்;.. ..

என்ற புறநானூற்று வரிகளில் :  மன்னவ,  உன் கொற்றம் உழவரின் உழவுப் படையால் விளைந்தது. மழை பொய்த்தாலும் வருவாய் குறைந்தாலும் இயற்கை அல்லாத செயற்கை தோன்றினாலும் உலகம் அதனைக் காக்கும் அரசனைத்தான் பழிக்கும் என பொருள் பட சொல்லப்படுகிறது.  

திருவல்லிக்கேணி சந்துகளில் படமாக்கப்பட்ட , தனுஷ் காஜல் அகர்வால் நடித்த மாரி படம் புறா வளர்ப்பு போட்டிகளை விவரமாக காண்பித்தது.  

Rock, Pink, Eurasian collared, wood, Mourning, Magnificent fruit, Victoria crowned,  Crowned sandgrouse , Indian fantail, Indian fantasy, Mondain, Iran roller, Italian Owl, Laudino Sevillano Cropper, Lenardo, Naked Neck Tumbler,  Nish Highflyer, Norwich Cropper  and much more……. If you are wondering what this is all about ~ these are some of the varieties of Pigeons…… those lovely birds…. the  word ‘pigeon’ is derived from the Latin word ‘pipio’, meaning ‘young cheeping bird’. It is also known as ‘dove’ which is of Norse origin. Pigeons are commonly found on Temples – the walls of Sri Parthasarathi Swami Temple have them in large numbers.

We have seen photos of ‘dove release’- our former Prime Minister was associated with roses and doves – a photo of Nehru releasing dove in 1950s taken by Homai Vyarawalla is famous.   Understand that although there are many types of white doves, the ones released in ceremonies, white rock doves, are actually white racing pigeons. Doves and pigeons are part of the same bird family, but people tend to disassociate the two birds; one is thought of as beautiful, the other foul. Whether you refer to them as white racing pigeons or white rock doves, releasing these birds at ceremonies and events carries symbolic meaning.  In some cases, pigeons released are immediately killed by predators !  Sad !!

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji  said today “Country has come a long way, earlier we used to release pigeons, now we release cheetahs”. The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for a new air-base in north Gujarat near the India-Pakistan border  saying it will be an effective centre for the country’s security.
