India, Maha Bharat is now a
powerful nation under Shri Narendra Modiji.
The power of the Indian democratic system manifests in our
Parliament, which has weathered the Indian freedom struggle from colonial rule
and witnessed many historical milestones. The existing building served as
independent India’s first Parliament and witnessed the adoption of the
Constitution of India. India’s present
Parliament House is a colonial-era building designed by British architects Sir
Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker, which took six years to construct (1921-1927).
Now all that is set to change remarkably for the better. The new
Parliament building is ready envisaged by the Prime Minister.
The Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji took the decision to adopt the Sengol as a national symbol of the Amrit Kaal. The new building of Parliament will witness the very same event, with Adheenam (Priests) repeating the ceremony and vesting the Hon’ble PM with the Sengol. The Sengol : - A symbol of just rule.
The Sengol is the symbol of the King’s power. This was handed over to Pt Jawaharlal Nehru on Aug 14, 1947. Made of silver, and gold-plated, this was ordered specially by the Adheenam, hand-crafted by Jeweller Vummidi Bangaru Chetty in Madras. Note the beautiful Nandi on the top of this masterpiece.
The Home Minister further elaborated on the Sengol and said, “The
Sengol is profound in meaning, which is derived from the Tamil word “Semmai”,
meaning “Righteousness”. It is blessed by the high priests of a leading Dharmic
Mutt in Tamil Nadu. The Nandi, with its unyielding gaze as the beholder of
“Nyaya”, is hand-carved at the top. Most
importantly, the recipient of the Sengol has the “order” (“Aanai” in Tamil) to
rule justly and fairly. This is what is most appealing, for those elected to
serve the people must never forget this.”
The same Sengol from 1947 will be installed by the Hon’ble Prime
Minister in the Lok Sabha, prominently close to the Speaker’s podium. It will
be displayed for the Nation to see, and will be taken out on special occasions.
INDIA won the freedom at a great cost – it was not
gifted, the rulers were not merciful – it was a struggle and freedom was the
culmination of innumerable lives sacrificed. Contrary to legend, the British had not been
keen to devolve power gradually. This struggle for sovereignty took many forms:
violent and non-violent, but one single
party reaped its benefits for long.
During colonial rule, the British who were painted to be benevolent,
lived a life away from the difficulty of common Indians, sheltered and pampered
in ‘white towns’, clubs and cantonments.
The wives of British officers ran households full of Indian servants, each with
assigned tasks, and socialised only with other Britons of equal rank.
Delivered
to the Constituent Assembly on August 14, 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru’s speech
titled ‘Tryst with Destiny’ has been quoted often in the 75 years since it was
first heard.
At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India
will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history,
when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul
of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.
We end today a period of ill fortune and India discovers herself
again. .. .. .. The achievement we
celebrate today is but a step, an opening of opportunity, to the greater
triumphs and achievements that await us. Are we brave enough and wise enough to
grasp this opportunity and accept the challenge of the future?

Months before India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal
Nehru made his ‘Tryst with Destiny’ speech in the Constituent Assembly, on the
eve of India’s independence, Thiruvaduthurai Aadheenam, one of India’s oldest
mutts, had its own tryst with destiny as it was given the historical mission of
making a sceptre to symbolise the transfer of power from the occupier to the
free nation.
According to historical archives, Lord Mountbatten asked the
soon-to-be PM, Nehru, as to how he wished to symbolise the attainment of
independence. Jawaharlal Nehru sought the opinion of C Rajagopalachari, the
last Governor-General of India. The former CM of Madras State enlightened Nehru
about a Tamil tradition when the high priest (‘rajaguru’) of the State would
present the new king with a sceptre when he assumes power.
The then seer, 20thGurumahaSannithanam Sri La Sri
Ambalavana Desika Swamigal, who despite being unwell at that time, accepted the
responsibility and arranged for making the gold sceptre with a bull (‘nandhi’)
on top by a jeweller in the then Madras. The seer sent a delegation consisting
of his representative Sri La Sri Kumaraswamy Thambiran, Manickam Odhuvaar
(priest who recites prayer in the mutt) and the mutt’s nadhaswaram vidhwan, TN
Rajarathinam Pillai, to New Delhi. The seer also sent an address in English to
congratulate Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru on the occasion. The delegation flew in a
special plane arranged by the Government. On August 14, 1947, around 11.45pm, minutes
before India’s got its independence, the delegation presented Nehru with the
sceptre in the presence of Rajendra Prasad and other leaders as instructed by
the seer. [and this was buried in History by
designs of those who presented the oft repeated story of India got freedom
without drop of bloodshed by the efforts of Gandhi and Nehru] ~ all that is set
to change now.
The
‘Sengol’, represents the values of fair and equitable governance. It will shine
near the Lok Sabha Speaker's podium as a national symbol of the Amrit Kaal, an
era that will witness the new India taking its rightful place in the world…
..tweeted Amit Anil Chandra Shah, the
Minister of Home Affairs. The reference
of course is to the Chola dynasty Sengol received from his Holiness ThiruvaduthuraiAtheenam
from Tamil Nadu during the transition of power to Pandit Nehru post our
independence.
Sadly,
it was not kept as Sengol but ..named as “walking stick’ and forlorn and
obscure in Nehru’s Prayagraj home. A
symbol of transfer of power blessed with
powerful chants by seers & with holy water was consumed to a unknown place
by the Socialists.
Senkol
aka sceptre is a staff or wand held in the hand by a ruling monarch as an item
of royal or imperial insignia. Figuratively, it means royal or imperial
authority or sovereignty… .. to us
‘Sengol’ is of higher significance.
Sceptre has assumed a significant role in many mythologies. It had a
central role in the Mesopotamian world, and was in most cases part of
the royal insignia of sovereigns and gods.
The Mesopotamian sceptre was mostly called ĝidru in Sumerian and ḫaṭṭum
in Akkadian. The ancient Tamil work of Tirukkural dedicates one chapter each to
the ethics of the sceptre.
But
to Nehruvian school, it was not Sengol but “walking stick gifted to Nehru” in
Nehru’s Prayagraj home. Conspicuously
there was no mention of it in his “Tryst with Destiny” speech in 1947 .. .. thanks to Shri Narendra Modiji the great
Prime Minister of the Nation, it is finding its rightful place in the
Parliament, the ruling block of the Nation.
Srivaishnavites very well know the Sengol – Namperumal adorns it
along with Pandiyan kondai. At
Thiruvallikkeni Sri Parthasarathi perumal is adorned with it on few
occasions. Here are photos of Sri
Parthasarathi Emperuman with Pandiyan kondai and Sengol and another with Sri
Ranganathar of Thiruvallikkeni with senkol.
New Parliament is Pride of India. The
Sengol truly deserves an honoured place in history

Central Vista stands as a testament to India's journey through the annals of history, bearing witness to the struggles and triumphs of the nation's freedom. Sengol, revered and presented by Thiruvaduthurai Atheenam, embodies the spirit of valor and resilience, echoing the echoes of India's rich heritage. As it resonates across time, this tribute serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made, the ideals upheld, and the unwavering pursuit of unity and progress ingrained in India's identity.
