Rangarattinam !!

A girl loses her mental balance while riding a giant wheel. She grows up,  is impregnated  without knowing the man in her life. The man who bears the brunt of the deed faces insurmountable problems until finally the hero emerges to the relief of all concerned.  !!!

 

Roseau  is the capital and largest city of Dominica, a small and compact urban settlement, surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, the Roseau River and Morne Bruce. Built on the site of the ancient Island Carib village of Sairi, it is the oldest and most important urban settlement on the island of Dominica. It is on the west (leeward) coast of Dominica and has a combination of modern and colonial French architecture. 

Caribbean islands are famous for its beaches and offer enjoyment to tourists.  Indians found Roseau to be place of comfort as centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma put India in a commanding position on the second day of the first Test at Windsor Park. At stumps, India were 312 for 2, leading West Indies by 162 with Jaiswal unbeaten on 143 and Virat Kohli 36. Thought he score line looks healthy, the progress was very slow as  India managed only 232 in 90 overs on the second day despite losing just two wickets.

 

Jaiswal became  the third Indian opener (yes for once Sunil Gavaskar is not part of that list)  after Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw, and the 17th Indian overall, to do so on Test debut.

 

சிறுவயதில் திருவிழாக்களிலும், பொருட்காட்சிகளிலும் மிகவும் கவர்ந்த ஒன்று - ரங்கராட்டினம்.  தெப்போத்சவம் சமயம் வரும் ரங்கராட்டினங்கள் சிறியவை - 4 அல்லது 5   பேட்டிகள் உயரமாக!  மேலெழுந்து வட்டப் பாதையில் சுற்றிவரும் தொட்டில்கள்; பிறிதொன்று - குதிரை, யான பொம்மைகளில் அமர்ந்து சுற்றி வருவது.  பீச்சில் இது சற்று பெரிய வட்டத்தில் சுழலும் போது சற்று பயமாக இருந்தாலும், வெளியே காட்டிக்கொள்ளாமல் இருக்க ஆ ஊஒ என்று கூச்சல்கள் எழும். 

 

நண்பர் காலச்சக்கரம் நரசிம்மாவின் நல்ல படைப்பு - "ரங்கராட்டினம்!"  கலியுகத்தில் மக்களின் மதிமயங்குவதற்கு கலி புருஷன் தேர்ந்தெடுத்த ஐந்து சாதனங்கள் சூதாட்டம், மது, மாமிசம், பெண் மற்றும் தங்கம், குறிப்பாக, சூரியகிரகணம் ஒன்றின் போது, பூமி பிளந்து வெளிப்படும் ‘அபரஞ்சி சுவர்ணம்’ தென்னகத்தை படாதபாடு படுத்துகிறது. நமது தர்மத்திற்கு பெரும் சோதனை விளைகிறது. அதை யார் பாதுகாத்து நம்மிடம் அதை எப்படி பத்திரமாக சேர்ப்பித்தார்கள் என்பதை விளக்குகிறது ‘ரங்கராட்டினம்’ கதை.

Rangarattinam, if you call it a spinning wheel could give a different meaning.  A spinning wheel is a device for spinning thread or yarn from fibres. It was fundamental to the cotton textile industry prior to the Industrial Revolution. It laid the foundations for later machinery such as the spinning jenny and spinning frame, which displaced the spinning wheel during the Industrial Revolution. 

Ranga rattinam is a carousel or  merry-go-round  - a type of amusement ride consisting of a rotating circular platform with seats for riders. The "seats" are traditionally in the form of rows of wooden horses or other animals mounted on posts, many of which are moved up and down by gears to simulate galloping, to the accompaniment of looped circus music. 

The plot at the start was the theme of movie “Ranga Rattinam” directed by Krishnan Panju released in 1971 produced by Sowcar Janaki, who acted alongside  Gemini Ganesan, Ravichandran and V. S. Raghavan.  Remember reading her interview that she came to Chennai with her husband and a child in her hadn in search of opportunities.
