IPL
has provided great opportunity for many youngsters – new stars are born every
day. Nepal leg-spinner Sandeep
Lamichhane was initially not a part of the long-list of 1122 players in IPL
auction in 2018. He was, however, later
included among the 578 players who eventually went under the hammer. The
18-year-old made history on Jan 2018
when he became the first cricketer from Nepal to sign for an IPL team.
Lamichhane was bought by Delhi Daredevils coached by Ricky Ponting, for his
base price of ₹20
lakh. Lamichhane first made an impact at the U-19 World Cup in 2016, where he
claimed a hat-trick in Nepal’s
defeat of Ireland.
ICC T20I WC 2024 is all set to start and now comes the news that Nepal legspinner Sandeep
Lamichhane will miss the T20 World Cup 2024 after his visa application to the
USA was rejected for a second time.
His
initial application was turned down last week, following which the Cricket
Association of Nepal (CAN) and the Nepal government intervened on his behalf,
but despite their efforts he was turned down again.
"Despite
taking necessary initiatives, along with the diplomatic note, from the
government of Nepal, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Youth and Sports,
National Sports Council, CAN and International Cricket Council (ICC) for
cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane's visit to participate in the 2024 ICC Men's T20
World Cup in the United States and West Indies, the US Embassy has expressed
its inability to give travel permission (visa) to national player Lamichhane to
play the World Cup," CAN said in a statement. The board said it remains committed though to
helping Lamichhane secure a visa for future travel to the US.
"The
US Embassy in Kathmandu and other US consular posts around the world have made
a concerted effort to ensure that members of national cricket teams who qualify
for the appropriate visa class are able to travel in time to compete in the
World Cup," a spokesperson of the US Embassy in Kathmandu said last week,
according to Kathmandu Post. "We cannot comment on individual visa cases
as visa records are confidential under US law."
Probable
reason : in Oct 2022 - Sandeep
Lamichhane was taken into custody by
police in Kathmandu in response to the arrest warrant that had been issued in
his name over an alleged case of coercion.
Sandeep immediately took to social media stating it was conspiracy and
wrongful allegation and that he would fully cooperate with the investigation
and fight a legal battle. In May 2024,
he was acquitted of rape by the Patan High Court in Nepal, allowing him to
resume playing cricket
When
news of Lamichhane's arrest warrant was made public, he was
in the West Indies, taking part in the Caribbean Premier League. Back then, he
had said he would leave the CPL and return to home to face the "baseless
allegations". Lamichhane, is by far
Nepal's most high-profile cricketer, and the only one to have played in T20
leagues in most parts of the world, including in the IPL, the BBL, the PSL, the
BPL, and the CPL. Lamichhane was Nepal's
captain at the time of the arrest warrant, a position he has since lost, having
been suspended by the board following the surfacing of the allegations
