Rains, Umbrella, Cinema songs and more !! ~ பொன்வானம் பன்னீர் தூவுது இந்நேரம்

Pyaar hua, ikraar hua hai

Pyaar se phir kyoon darrta hai dil

For sure people have a bad attitude !  - they blame it when it comes and also blame it whenever it fails ! it is all about Rains ! and a picture  post on people holding Umbrellas.  Further some think that they have an inverse correlation with umbrella and rain – whenever they take an Umbrella along, it does not rain, and when they forget, it rains, drenching them !!  Some of us do enjoy those sudden rain showers too !

A few years ago, we were presented with  a Marine insurance claim – TL consignment of Umbrellas – though there was a road accident to the carrying truck, the immediate Q was what would happen to the finished product of branded Umbrellas, which were claimed as a total loss !!

It is monsoon time and as of Sept 7, reports suggest that  India experienced an 8 per cent above average rainfall, offering much-needed respite to its agrarian economy. Despite the overall positive outlook, monsoon distribution across the country has been notably uneven.   While Rajasthan enjoyed a 57 per cent surplus, which is crucial for its typically arid landscape, Manipur suffered a 30 per cent deficit, raising concerns about water scarcity and agricultural stress. India's diverse climatic conditions often lead to varied rainfall patterns.

Back home, we are facing hot days ! – an unusually severe August and we are experiencing hot Sun even in Sept.  August ended with many humid days and deficit rainfall recorded by the Nungambakkam observatory. Sept may also have dry weather, but the days may get pleasant as IMD has forecast below normal rainfall and day temperatures in several parts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, for the month.

Umbrellas are water-proof and modern ones come in attractive colours and fold up to a compact size that fits in most bags and boxes !   At the touch of a button, it forcefully expands to reveal an ample canopy   which protects your head and bulky body.

The world's most expensive new car  by Rolls-Royce –has an umbrella that extends out of the back! The £20million (INR 20.60 Cr approx. ) Boat Tail convertible grand tourer is the first of an exclusive trio of highly personalised nautically-based limousines. It has been specially commissioned by a wealthy and 'flamboyant' couple with a love of chilled champagne and alfresco meals - hence the vehicle's incredible rear deck housing a dinner set, rotating cocktail tables with matching chairs and a parasol that automatically extends out when they want to dine at the rear of their Roller.

Great poet ThiruValluvar says the world would abide by and be secure under the umbrella of a King who can endure words bitter to his ear.

In 1970s watched leggie Bhagwath Chandrasekhar run in and bowl fast, his mystery leg spins. Derek  Underwood akin to Chandrasekhar,  bowled at around medium pace and was often unplayable on seaming English wickets, particularly sticky wickets, earning his nickname 'Deadly', and accounting for the saying that England would "carry Underwood like an umbrella, in case of rain". Underwood was noted for his consistent accuracy, and his inswinging arm ball was particularly noted for dismissing batsmen leg before wicket.

Indru Nee Naalai Naan  directed by Major Sundarrajan hit the screens in 1983. The cast was  Sivakumar, Jaishankar, Lakshmi and Sulakshana.  The songs in the movie were a big hit – credits Isaignani Illayaraja. For sure you would have heard and enjoyed this song :

பொன்வானம் பன்னீர் தூவுது இந்நேரம்

அட எண்ணம் மீறுது வண்ணம் மாறுது கண்ணோரம்

It was the second movie directed by Major Sundarrajan,  after Kalthoon (1982) and was produced by his younger brother Sampath alongside Pala. Karuppiah. This song  "Ponvaanam Panneer Thoovuthu" is set in the Carnatic raga Gourimanohari.  The film reportedly was based on the novel Thookku mara nizhalil by CA Balan.

Before concluding the lyrics at the start was a famous number of Rajkapur.  Most Hindi cine viewers would remember Raj Kapoor and Nargis walking under one umbrella in the rain singing that iconic song “Pyaar Hua Ikraar Hua Hai”. Then they pass a tea stall owner who has an immensely contented and delighted expression sipping hot tea in the pouring rain !

Here is a picture of people waiting patiently unfolding their umbrellas with slight drizzle making it pleasant and enjoyable.

With regards – S Sampathkumar
