Sea-Cow !!

Ever  seen  a Sea-Cow ?  -  Manatees are aquatic mammals that belong to a group of animals called Sirenia.  

கடல் பசு என்பது கடலில் மீன் பிடிப்பகுதிகளில் காணப்படும் தாவரங்களைத் தின்று வாழும் ஒரு உயிரினம் ஆகும்.   மன்னார் வளைகுடாப் பகுதியில் ஒரு காலத்தில் கடல் பசுக்கள் அதிகம் வாழ்ந்தன.   தலை முதல் இடை வரையில் பெண்ணைப் போலவும், கால் பகுதி மீனின் வாலைப் போலவும் இருப்பதே கடல்கன்னி என்றும், அது மனிதர்களுடன் பழகக்கூடியது என்றும் பல்வேறு நாட்டு மீனவர்கள் கதை சொல்லிக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.  “உண்மையில், கடல்கன்னி என்றொரு உயிரினம் இல்லவேயில்லை. கடல்பசுவைத்தான் மீனவர்கள் கடல்கன்னி என்று தவறாகக் கருதியிருக்கக்கூடும்” என்கிறார்கள் அறிவியலாளர்கள். 

What is grouped as Sea-cow also contains dugongs. Dugongs and manatees look quite alike - they're similar in size, colour and shape, and both have flexible flippers for forelimbs.    They are related to sea-cows. 

Steller's sea cow (Hydrodamalis gigas) is an extinct sirenian described by Georg Wilhelm Steller in 1741. At that time, it was found only around the Commander Islands in the Bering Sea between Alaska and Russia; its range extended across the North Pacific during the Pleistocene epoch, and likely contracted to such an extreme degree due to the glacial cycle.  When Europeans discovered them, there may have been only 2,000 individuals left.  This small population was quickly wiped out by fur traders, seal hunters, and others who followed Vitus Bering's route past its habitat to Alaska. It was also hunted to collect its valuable subcutaneous fat.

 

Some cows do wander closer to the shore of Bay of Bengal and here is one beautiful Cow pictured nearer the Sea.  A Sea Cow !
