Cranes are large birds with long
legs, necks & long bills, in the
biological family Gruidae of the order Gruiformes. The family has 15 species
placed in four genera which are Antigone, Balearica, Leucogeranus, and Grus.
They resemble herons and egrets in body shape, but tend to have heavier bodies. Cranes are generally brown, gray, or white in color. They are powerful flyers, with some having the ability to fly over the Himalayas. During migration cranes fly with their head and neck straight out and their feet and legs straight behind them.
