IPL 2025 set to start ! ~ some Trivia and photos

What will We, Cricket fans do after 26th May 2025 !!  - before you read further about the greatest Cricketing extravaganza, do you remember the result of that 2nd match of IPL inaugural season 2008 – and who bowled for CSK in that match ?

2025 Indian Premier League (IPL 18) [brand Tata IPL 2025] starts tomorrow and for  the first time since they played the first game of the IPL Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru will start the season. That day in 2008 redefined the way India and rest of the World watch Cricket – thousand games have gone, the fans are still craving for enough – as stadiums get filled up faster though the ticket prices are astronomical.

IPL 2025 will feature  ten teams competing in 74 matches from 22 March to 25 May 2025, held across 13 cities in India, with Kolkata hosting the opening ceremony and the final as the Kolkata Knight Riders are the defending champions.  In a bit complex format, each team will play twice against the teams in their group and the team in the same row in the other group, and once against the remaining four teams in the other group. After the group stage, the top four teams based on aggregate points will qualify for the playoffs.  Then there will be a Qualifier, Eliminator and another qualifier before the Finals.

The players were bought (after retention process) in a   Mega Auction  held in Nov 2024  at the Abadi Al Johar Arena in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.  A record-breaking 1,574 players registered for the auction.  For this season there are 10 teams – here is a look at the Coach and Captain for each team.

Team Chennai Super Kings – Stephen Fleming & Ruturaj Gaikwad;  Kolkata Knight Riders -  Chandrakant Pandit & Ajinkya Rahane; Punjab Kings       - Ricky Ponting & Shreyas Iyer;  Rajasthan Royals – Rahul Dravid & Sanju Samson; Royal Challengers Bengaluru  - Andy Flower & Rajat Patidar; Delhi Capital – Hemang Badani & Axar Patel;  Gujarat Titans     - Ashish Nehra & Shubman Gill; Lucknow Super Giants - Justin Langer & Rishabh Pant;  Mumbai Indians - Mahela Jayawardene & Hardik Pandya; Sunrisers Hyderabad - Daniel Vettori & Pat Cummins.

The league stage will be played at 13 stadiums across India. The opening match will be at Eden Gardens.   The first two matches of the playoffs will be played in Hyderabad, with Kolkata hosting the other playoff matches, including the final.

On Sunday, MI play CSK at Chepauk -  Suryakumar Yadav will lead Mumbai Indians (MI) in their opening game of IPL 2025, with regular captain Hardik Pandya out serving the one-match ban he picked up in the team's last IPL 2024 game. "We have been officially communicated that he [Hardik] has to miss [the first game]," Mahela Jayawardene, the MI head coach, said in a press meet.  Hardik was penalised for MI's slow over-rate in their last league game of IPL 2024, against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Since that was his third offence of the season, Hardik was given a one-match suspension for his next IPL game, along with an INR 30 lakh fine. He will be available for MI's second game, also away, in Ahmedabad against Gujarat Titans (GT) on March 29. MI had finished last in IPL 2024 after winning only four out of 14 games.

The curtain raiser first match of this season   is all set to be played between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Eden Gardens on Saturday, March 22. However there is some news that the match could be abandoned due to weather.  The India Meteorological Department has predicted thunderstorms and rain for South Bengal from Thursday to Sunday.

If you remember the Q at the start – in the 2nd match of IPL 2008 -  Chennai Super Kings 240 for 5 (Hussey 116*, Raina 32, Badrinath 31*) beat Kings XI Punjab 207 for 4 (Hopes 71, Sangakkara 54) by 33 run. James Hopes' 32-ball 71 couldn't overhaul a massive total of 240, while the Chennai Super Kings thanked Western Australia specialist Michael Hussey  scintillating unbeaten 116.  The bowling attack of CSK was : Jacob Oram 4-0-37-0; Manpreet Gony 4-0-42-1;  Muthiah Muralidaran 4-0-33-1; Palani Amarnath 4-0-42-1 & Joginder Sharma 4-0-47-1.
